Amid several reports of road accidents, Kolkata's Commissioner of Police, Manoj Verma has said that the city’s traffic management and road safety measures were far better than other major cities in the country. Verma emphasized Kolkata’s efforts to reduce casualties, citing improved policing and infrastructure upgrades as key contributors.
Several incidents have recently drawn public attention. In January, a government bus collided with a motorbike in Jadavpur, leading to the tragic death of a 28-year-old woman and severe injuries to her husband. Eyewitnesses reported that the bus was speeding when it rammed into the bike. In February, a fatal road accident occurred near the Chinar Park signal in Baguiati when a bus collided with a motorbike, resulting in the biker’s death. In addition to these cases, several similar accidents have been reported in recent months.
To address these concerns, the Kolkata Traffic Police has been ramping up efforts through campaigns such as 'Safe Drive Save Life,' aimed at reducing road accidents. The police have also been increasing checks on buses and private vehicles to ensure compliance with speed limits and traffic regulations. While the number of accidents remains high, authorities are committed to further improving traffic safety and minimizing the risk of future incidents.
